Pennsylvania trucking companies are one of the most important parts of the Keystone State’s economy and the distribution network of the entire country. Trucking is one of the biggest industries in Pennsylvania, accounting for one of every 17 jobs in the state with more than 300,000 trucking industry jobs statewide.
Pennsylvania Trucking and the Economy
Almost 90% of Pennsylvania communities rely exclusively on trucks to move their goods, and Pennsylvania trucking companies transport 86% of the manufactured goods produced in the state, about half a million tons each day. The trucking industry pays more than $15 billion in annual wages with an average annual salary of nearly $50,000.
Nearly 32,000 trucking companies operate in Pennsylvania, most of which are small businesses that support countless other small businesses throughout the state. Pennsylvania trucking companies also pay much more than most other businesses in state and federal highway user fees and taxes. For example, the average five-axle tractor-semitrailer combination vehicle in 2018 paid roughly $14,000 in state fees and taxes and almost $9,000 in federal highway user fees and taxes. The Pennsylvania trucking industry as a whole pays nearly $2 billion in state and federal taxes.
Supporting PA Truckers
The Pennsylvania trucking industry also contributes to the overall tax burden shared by all Pennsylvania motorists, paying nearly 40% of all motorist taxes owed even though Pennsylvania trucks only comprise roughly 9% of all vehicle miles traveled in the state. This is just one example of how much the American economy depends on the trucking industry, and the Pennsylvania Motor Truck Association (PMTA) has supported the Pennsylvania trucking industry since 1928.
The PMTA regularly works with organizations like the State Police, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to promote and preserve the trucking industry’s rights. Member companies and their employees in Pennsylvania enjoy a wide range of PMTA benefits, including service discounts, access to coaching and training programs, annual networking events, and representation before local, state, and federal policymakers.
