About Rhode Island
Rhode Island may be the smallest state in the country, but the trucking industry of Rhode Island has a big impact on the economy of New England and the United States as a whole. Nearly 90% of the communities in Rhode Island rely exclusively on trucks to move their goods, and the Rhode Island trucking industry includes more than 18,000 jobs and more than 2,500 companies throughout the state. More than 96% of all goods manufactured in Rhode Island travel to their destinations by truck.
Over the years, the trucking industry has faced numerous challenges, and one of the first lines of defense for the Rhode Island trucking industry throughout the years has been the Rhode Island Trucking Association (RITA).
This nonprofit, member-driven trade association provides numerous benefits for member companies and their employees, but the primary function of RITA is to serve as the voice of the Rhode Island trucking industry in front of the state legislature and the United States Congress. Founded in 1931, RITA members today include independent owner-operators, for-hire and private trucking companies, and allied businesses that provide services, equipment, and products to the trucking industry.
What Does RITA Offer?
Members of RITA enjoy various benefits aside from political representation. Member companies and their employees can take advantage of various RITA-sponsored programs, including driver recruitment programs, safety courses, driver coaching programs, and networking events to encourage stronger relationships between the Rhode Island trucking industry and allied businesses throughout the state.
RITA also works with various agencies throughout Rhode Island and the rest of the country to reduce the rate of fatal accidents and curb the environmental impact of the trucking industry. Over the years, RITA and member companies have worked with the Rhode Island State Police, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Environmental Protection Agency, and many other private companies and allied businesses with the goals of safer, more sustainable business practices for the trucking industry.
